Your star rating may be invisible to ChatGPT. We checked 48 DTC product pages.

21 of 48 product pages have no review rating in the raw page that ChatGPT’s and Claude’s crawlers read. On 5 of them the rating appears only after JavaScript runs. Price gets you on the list. Proof gets you picked.

When an AI assistant picks products, it compares. Price tells it what you cost. A rating tells it whether shoppers liked what they got. If the AI cannot find your rating, you are a price with nothing to vouch for it.

What we checked

Product pages carry a hidden block of data written for machines, called structured data. It can hold the product name, price, stock and the review rating. Google uses it to show stars, price and availability in search results.

From Oct 13 to 15, 2026 we opened one real product page from each of 48 well-known US DTC brands. We read each page twice: as the server sends it, and again in a browser after JavaScript has run. The full method is at the end.

Most pages get the basics right

46 of the 48 pages have Product data. 44 give a price and 44 say whether the item is in stock. 32 carry a review rating. On the basics, DTC brands are in good shape.

But 21 have no rating in the raw page

Read as the server sends it, only 27 of the 48 pages carry a rating. On 5 more, the rating appears only after JavaScript runs in the browser. On 16, it never appears at all.

That gap matters because many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. In a December 2024 study, Vercel found that the major AI crawlers it tracked, including OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Perplexity’s, do not render JavaScript. Google’s Gemini, which uses Google’s own crawler, and Applebot do. So ChatGPT’s and Claude’s crawlers may never see a rating that only JavaScript adds.

What the crawler sees

Your shoppers see the stars. A crawler that reads only the raw page sees the product and the price, and no proof. The fix is to put the rating into the structured data on the server, not only in the widget that draws the stars.

13 pages give a price and no rating

13 of the 48 pages give AI a price and nothing to judge quality by, even after JavaScript runs. 7 of those 13 show signs of a reviews app on the page. If that app shows stars to shoppers, crawlers are not getting them.

2 more pages have Product data with no price, and 2 have no Product data at all.

What good looks like

Gymshark’s product page carries the full set in the raw page, as the server sends it: the product, its price, whether it is in stock, and an aggregate rating with the number of reviews behind it. Any crawler that reads the page gets the proof.

How Shopthru.ai helps

Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.

How we measured

When
Oct 13 to 15, 2026
Pages
One real product page from each of 48 well-known US DTC brands, picked from the store’s product feed, sitemap or a homepage link. Never a gift card, collection or landing page.
Not counted
Of 118 brands, 41 could not be reached (rate limits, a refused bot, a site that did not load, or a redirect to another brand), 16 gave us no product page to read, and 13 pages were not a real product page we could confirm.
Raw page
Fetched by a bot that identified itself as ShopthruResearch/1.0, at most one request per second per site.
Rendered
Every page missing Product data or a rating was opened again in a headless Chrome browser, so data added by JavaScript was counted.
Rating
Counted only when an AggregateRating with a value and a review or rating count sits inside the Product data.
Brand named
Gymshark, re-checked live on Oct 14, 2026.
