AI agents can now buy from your store. Here is who, and since when.
Google, Shopify, Meta, Instinct and TikTok all moved this year. The agent no longer just recommends. It checks out. What changed, and what it means for your store this holiday.
A year ago, AI assistants recommended products and sent shoppers to your site. Now they can finish the purchase. In a few weeks this fall, the biggest platforms in commerce all opened checkout to AI agents.
Here is what shipped, in order, from sources we opened ourselves.
Google: the agent watches the price, then buys
Google started rolling out agentic checkout in Search, including AI Mode, in November 2025. A shopper tracks an item down to size, colour and budget, and when the price fits, Google can buy it for them from eligible US merchants such as Wayfair, Chewy, Quince and select Shopify stores.
Underneath is the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Google built with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, so any agent can find products, build a cart and check out in one common language. At I/O in May 2026, Google added the Universal Cart.
Shopify: agents can complete checkout
On Sep 28, Shopify said browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify stores, rolling out to all eligible merchants. Agents can read the checkout, change the address or delivery option, and place the order once the buyer approves, including with Shop Pay.
Shopify’s Spring 2026 Edition had already added a Shop skill, so shoppers using personal AI agents can discover products across Shopify and approve purchases through Shop.
Meta Muse and Instinct: personal agents that shop
Meta launched Muse on Sep 8, a personal AI agent for US users that can make purchases using Link by Stripe. It is free to start, with paid plans at $20 and $100 a month. Muse and Instinct both have direct partnerships with Shopify.
Instinct’s founder, Noah Shinn, said on a podcast that the agent is approaching a billion dollars in annual transactions, more than half of them travel. That is the company’s own figure.
TikTok: an assistant and one-click checkout in the feed
On Oct 5, TikTok announced Agentic Commerce, starting with Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that answers questions on product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and Buy Direct, one-click checkout from a brand inside the For You feed. TikTok named Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe as partners. It gave no launch date.
Not everyone is opening the door
Amazon began blocking Muse from its store. Other sites block agents by accident, with bot checks built for scrapers. We covered that in The CAPTCHA that ate Christmas.
What this means for your store
When an agent buys, the shopper never sees your product page. The agent reads your data, compares you with others, and puts one option in front of the shopper to approve. So the facts an agent reads, price, stock, sizes, shipping and returns, now decide the sale.
Before the holiday rush
Five things to check now. Tick them off as you go.
How Shopthru.ai helps
Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
