BigCommerce just turned on WebMCP for eligible stores. The platform cannot write your answers.

Since Oct 21, shoppers’ browser agents can search eligible BigCommerce stores and fill a cart with no setup. What the agent hears back about your products is still up to you.

On Oct 21, Commerce.com, the parent of BigCommerce, announced a partnership with Cloudflare. Its release says AI agents in a customer’s web browser can now search, compare and shop on BigCommerce merchants’ online stores with no setup required. The functionality is on by default for eligible merchants.

What was switched on

WebMCP, in Commerce.com’s words, is a standard that lets a website tell a shopper’s browser agent directly what it sells and what it can do. Without it, the release says, most stores leave agents guessing at buttons and forms.

The release gives an example. A shopper asks a browser agent to find a lightweight jacket in her size under $150. The agent can search the store’s actual products and prices, add the best match to a cart, and hand back a link to complete checkout on the merchant’s store.

What stays with the merchant

Commerce.com says merchants do not need to write code or change their site, and that checkout, the customer relationship and the brand stay with the merchant. Merchants can turn the feature off in a new settings menu. BigCommerce’s own post names it the MCP settings menu in the Control Panel.

BigCommerce also says what an agent can do depends on the tools the integration supports, how your store is set up, and the shopper’s sign-in and permissions.

How it works, and where it is early

WebMCP builds on BigCommerce’s existing Storefront MCP servers, which expose shopping actions to agents. Cloudflare supplies the browser connection. Cloudflare’s post says the tools run inside the shopper’s own browser session on the store’s domain, and that it is turning WebMCP on across almost 100,000 Commerce.com domains.

There is a caveat from Cloudflare itself. It calls WebMCP an experimental, proposed browser standard in early preview, currently behind experimental Chrome flags. If a shopper’s browser does not support it, the script exits and the storefront loads normally. So today this reaches a small group of shoppers, but the plumbing is now in place.

What the platform cannot answer

A tool can tell an agent what is in stock, at what price, in which sizes. It cannot tell the agent which jacket is best for a rainy commute. That comes from your product copy: who it is for, how it fits, what it is made of, and what other people say about it. The commute question is our example, not one from the release.

The same goes for policies. An agent can fetch your products. Whether the shipping and returns terms it reads are clear and current is on you.

What to do this week

If you are on BigCommerce, find out whether your store is eligible and decide on purpose whether to keep it on. Then check the content the agent will read.

How Shopthru.ai helps

Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
