Amex just built rails for AI shopping agents

A card network is getting ready for agents that buy. How its new framework works, and the question it leaves for brands.

American Express announced its "Intent Intelligence Framework" on Oct 13. It checks that an AI agent buys what the shopper asked for, before the card is charged. Payments companies do not build for demos. They build for volume they expect.

What Amex announced

An agent captures what the shopper wants: the store, the budget, the product details. The shopper signs off. Amex then issues a token that carries those limits, and the agent pays with that token instead of the real card number.

Amex hopes it becomes an industry standard for AI purchases. It is part of the ACE Developer Toolkit, which Amex launched in April.

The size 9 example

Amex gave TechCrunch a simple case. A shopper asks for white Nike sneakers in size 9. The agent tries to buy Adidas. Because the intent was captured first, Amex can stop the purchase.

Our approach differs from the implementations of others in that it pulls intent earlier into the transaction flow.

Shoppers say they are ready

Amex has not seen more disputes from agent purchases yet. It is building ahead of the curve because shoppers say they will use agents.

The question it leaves for brands

The framework checks that the agent bought what the shopper asked for. It does not check whether the agent ever considered you.

Before any token is issued, the agent has already searched, compared and shortlisted. If it cannot read your sizes, your stock or your reviews, you are not on that list. The payment rails then work perfectly, for someone else.

What to do this week

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode for the best product in your category. Note who gets named.
  2. Ask about your own product: sizes, stock, shipping, returns. Note every wrong answer.
  3. Fix the source. Put current sizes, stock, policies and your review rating where AI reads them: product pages, structured data, feeds.
  4. Ask again in a week. Answers change slowly, so measure, do not guess.

How Shopthru.ai helps

Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what they say about your store, drafts each fix into an approval inbox, ships only on your yes, then measures again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
