AI shoppers used to convert 38% worse. Now they convert 60% better.
In 16 months, shoppers who arrive from AI went from converting worse than other traffic to converting better. What changed, and why the decision now happens before the click.
Adobe Analytics tracks visits to US retail sites that arrive from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. In early 2025, those visitors bought less often than everyone else. Then it flipped.
The flip
- March 2025: AI traffic converted 38% worse than non-AI traffic.
- March 2026: 42% better, a reversal in one year.
- July 2026: 60% better, the 11th straight month AI traffic beat non-AI traffic on conversion (Digital Commerce 360).
Non-AI traffic here includes channels such as paid search and email.
Each AI visit is worth more
It is not only that more of them buy. In July 2026, shoppers who came from AI also spent more per visit and filled more carts than other shoppers.
What changed
Adobe’s numbers do not say why, but the shape is easy to read. The research now happens before the click. A shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, compares options inside the answer, and arrives on the store already decided. The visit is the last step, not the first.
It is already big money
Salesforce looked at the 2025 holiday season across the world. It found AI and agents drove 20% of all retail sales and $262 billion in revenue.
The part you cannot see
Your analytics show the visit. They do not show the answer that sent it, or the answers that sent shoppers to someone else. The shoppers who matter most are deciding somewhere you cannot see.
That makes one question worth asking every week: when a shopper asks AI about your category, what does it say, and is it right?
How Shopthru.ai helps
Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot the questions your shoppers ask, finds where you are missing or described wrongly, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then measures again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
