AI cited Shopify product pages 6% of the time. Blog posts got 76%.

Genview asked four AI assistants 50 shopping questions, twice, and sorted every cited Shopify page by type. Product pages were a small slice of the citations.

Source: Genview (FID Ltd.) study, Oct 1, 2026. 50 English questions, 2 runs; ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok.

Genview, a Shopify-focused site run by FID Ltd. in Tokyo, published a study on Oct 2, 2026 about which Shopify pages AI assistants cite. Genview makes its case for store owners to write articles, so read its conclusions with that in mind. The counts themselves are easy to follow.

How the study was run

On Oct 1, 2026, Genview asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, all with web search on, 50 English shopping questions. The questions covered 10 categories, such as skincare, coffee, camping gear and sneakers, and 5 question types. It asked the same 50 questions twice. That gave 1,728 citations in the first run and 1,704 in the second.

To spot Shopify stores, Genview opened every cited page and looked for traces of Shopify, or checked whether the domain pointed to Shopify’s servers. It also asked Claude, but Claude returned no cited URLs, so Claude is not in the study.

One in five citations was a Shopify store

In both runs, 20.5% of cited pages belonged to Shopify stores: 355 of 1,728 and 349 of 1,704. At least one Shopify page was cited for 49 of the 50 questions in the first run and 47 in the second. So individual stores do get cited, not only media and review sites.

Which Shopify pages got cited

Genview sorted the 704 cited Shopify pages, both runs combined, by URL. Blog posts were 537, or 76.3%. Product pages were 40, or 5.7%. The rest were pages (39), collections (37) and the home page and other (51).

Genview reads this as AI picking pages that answer the question in writing over the store’s sales floor. That reading is its interpretation, not something it measured.

Where product pages did and did not appear

The split depends on the question. For "how to choose" questions, 92% of 156 cited Shopify pages were blog posts and none were product pages. For "difference" questions, 92% of 148 were blog posts and none were product pages. For "how to use" and "problems" questions, 82% of 172 were blog posts and 6 were product pages.

Only for "best picks" questions did product pages show up in numbers: 34 of 228 cited pages, while blog posts were still 51%. Almost every product page citation came from a "what is the best" question.

Each assistant cites Shopify differently

Shopify’s share of cited pages was 36% for Gemini (459 of 1,275), 25.1% for ChatGPT (73 of 291), 14% for Grok (121 of 866) and 5.1% for Perplexity (51 of 1,000). Being cited by one assistant says little about the others.

What this study cannot tell you

  • It ran on one day, and Genview notes AI answers change from day to day and run to run.
  • The main questions were in English. In a smaller Japanese run, 8.8% of 827 citations were Shopify stores and 66% of those pages were blog posts.
  • Page type comes from the URL path, so a store with an unusual structure may be counted wrong.
  • It counts citations, not sales or clicks.

How Shopthru.ai helps

Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
