Shopify just opened its catalog to any AI agent. Access is not your edge.
Every brand in the catalog got the same access on the same day. What decides the sale is what the agent can read about you when it checks the shopper’s rules.
On Tuesday, Oct 13, Shopify said shoppers can now connect any AI agent to their Shop account and let it buy for them. The agent checks out with Shop Pay inside the conversation. More agents now reach over a billion listings in Shopify’s catalog.
It is a big step. But it is not a win for your brand. Not yet.
What changed
In September, Shopify partnered with Meta so its Muse agent could browse and buy on a shopper’s behalf. On Sep 28, Shopify opened checkout to browser-based AI agents. Now a shopper can use any agent, with no partnership needed.
The shopper connects their agent to Shop. Orders flow back to the Shop app. By default the agent prepares each checkout and the shopper approves it. In some cases the shopper can set a spending limit and let the agent complete the purchase.
Access is not the edge
Every brand in that catalog got the same access on the same day. If every store is open to every agent, being open sets you apart from no one.
The shopper gives the agent rules
Shopify pitches the agent as a personal shopper that takes rules, like a budget cap or fast shipping only. Shop’s own help page suggests a rule like “Don’t buy items from stores that don’t accept returns”.
So the agent does not ask which brand is best. It asks which brands pass the rules. Then it compares what it can read about you against everyone else.
What the agent reads
Every rule turns into a check on your data. A budget rule reads your price. A shipping rule reads your delivery promise. A returns rule reads your published return policy: Shop says the agent reads the store’s return policy and tells the shopper the return window.
If the agent cannot find the answer, or finds an old one, you do not get a second look. You simply fail the rule.
Even Shopify says agents get it wrong
Shop’s help page warns shoppers that agents might make mistakes and show inaccurate product, price, tax, shipping, availability or return information. That is the platform telling buyers to double-check. The brands that win make sure there is nothing to double-check.

How Shopthru.ai helps
Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
