Walmart wrote terms for AI shopping agents. Copy the fine print, not the gateway.

On Oct 21 Walmart announced a gateway, agent profiles and written terms for agents. You will not build a gateway. You can answer the same three questions on your own pages.

Most coverage of Walmart’s Oct 21 announcement is about the technology. The part a smaller brand can use is the list of rules Walmart wrote for agents that shop on its site.

What Walmart announced

Walmart named three things: Agent Profiles, the Walmart Agent Gateway, and terms for AI agents. TechCrunch describes the gateway as Walmart’s new MCP server, which helps approved agents connect to Walmart and lets an agent search its online inventory and buy for the user. It covers Walmart and Sam’s Club.

Agent Profiles, Walmart says, launch in the next month. Each agent a customer authorizes gets its own profile in their account, so its purchases show separately. The customer can require approval for every purchase, or set a spending limit, and Walmart gives $50, $100 or $200 as examples. Walmart compares it to adding someone as a cardholder on your credit card.

The terms agents must follow

Walmart lists what agents can and cannot do. These are from its newsroom post:

  • Customers are in control, and Walmart’s returns process applies, including if an agent does not act as intended.
  • Customers must approve agent purchases by default, and Walmart may require extra approvals even within a spending limit.
  • Agents must not take actions beyond what the shopper intends.
  • Agents do not receive payment card information and cannot add or change a payment method.
  • Agents can access only the information needed for the task and allowed by the customer.

Agents that do not follow the terms will be blocked from Walmart’s site.

The price promise

Walmart also says it prices “products, not people”. In its words, the prices an AI agent sees are the same prices a human would see on Walmart.com, with applicable offers and fees shown before purchase.

This is a statement the shopper can rely on. It is also a thing an agent can check. If your page shows one price and your cart shows another, an agent reads two answers.

Three answers to write on your own pages

We read three of Walmart’s terms as questions any store can answer in plain words. This is our reading, not Walmart’s advice.

  1. The full price. What does it cost with shipping, fees and any offer, before the shopper pays?
  2. What the shopper confirms. Does a person approve each order, and where?
  3. What happens when an agent orders the wrong thing. Do your normal returns apply? Say so.

The third one is the most useful. TechCrunch calls Walmart’s returns term a customer friendly condition that could sway shoppers who worry about being an early tester of agentic commerce. A small brand can offer the same comfort in one sentence on its returns page.

How Shopthru.ai helps

Shopthru.ai is an AI agents team for consumer brands. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot what your shoppers ask, finds where AI gets your products, prices or policies wrong, and drafts each fix into an approval inbox. It ships only on your yes, then checks again. Instagram and Amazon are next.
